There is no 'shushing' happening in St. Louis School's Learning Commons space. The space is alive with the voices of students working together, establishing all kinds of connections with each other and their projects. The space promotes active, engaged learning and includes a full-service Makerspace.
Charlotte Brown, Learning Commons Assistant, talks about how the space is used. "The former library has evolved into a full-service learning, research and project space that also includes a makerspace. The makerspace is a collaborative space inside our Learning Commons for making, learning, exploring and sharing that uses innovative technology and tech tools. We have a variety of makerspace equipment including 3D printers, computers, laser cutters, soldering irons and even a sewing machine. We also have a Lego wall, cardboard building center and art supplies. The space is designed to help inspire a student's creativity so they can explore their interests."
The Learning Commons space brings together the functions of a library but in a creative, collaborative way that incorporates technology. There are still lots of books in the Learning Commons for students to use for research and pleasure reading.
